Celebrando el Mes de la Herencia Latina / Celebrating Latino Heritage Month

This September 15, the Center for Congregations is proud to celebrate Latino Heritage Month with our Latino family all across the state of Indiana. In this guest blog, Nicholas J.  Crookston, Notre Dame ’23, Past President of Notre Dame’s Latinx Student Alliance, and Colombian-American Activist & Community Servant, reflects on the significance of this celebration and the importance of faith to the Latino community. Este 15 de septiembre, el Centro para Congregaciones está orgulloso de celebrar el Mes de la herencia latina con nuestra familia latina, por todo el estado de Indiana. En este blog invitado, Nicholas J. Crookston, Notre Dame ’23, ex presidente de la Alianza Estudiantil Latinx de Notre Dame, y activista y servidor comunitario colombiano-estadounidense, reflexiona sobre el significado de esta celebración y la importancia de la fe para la comunidad latina.

La comunidad latina de Indiana – así como la comunidad latina por toda la nación – es profundamente diversa. Tenemos raíces bien fuertes en muchos países en América latina – de Argentina a Colombia, Panamá a México, Cuba a la República Dominicana, y muchos más. 

Cada uno de nosotros tiene una historia familiar muy abundante en este país. Si somos hijos de inmigrantes o inmigrantes nosotros mismos, o si nuestras familias han llamado a esta tierra su hogar a lo largo de muchas generaciones, Latinos son un pilar integral de la historia estadounidense. 

De muchas formas, la fe es central en nuestra historia.

La fe es un principio fundamental de la identidad de la comunidad latina. La conexión de nuestra comunidad a nuestras tradiciones de la fe es tan fuerte que trasciende fronteras y la distancia entre nuestros países latinoamericanos y nuestras comunidades aquí en Indiana y por todos los Estados Unidos. Une a nuestras familias. Nos sostiene en tiempos difíciles y en la cara de historias de discriminación. Nos eleva en tiempos de celebración y éxito, mientras nosotros continuamos la lucha por nuestros sueños estadounidenses. 

A través de las oraciones, encontramos la esperanza de un futuro mejor para nosotros y nuestros hijos.

A través de nuestras congregaciones, descubrimos familia nueva y conexiones que promueven el poder de la comunidad. 

Del norte al sur, del este al oeste, nuestra comunidad y nuestras familias tienen una presencia fuerte en ciudades y pueblos por todo el estado de Indiana. De nuevo, la comunidad latina en Indiana es bien diversa – en nuestras origines, identidades raciales y también nuestras tradiciones de la fe.

Hay que celebrar todo esto – durante el Mes de la herencia latina, y todo el año.

English Translation

Indiana’s Latino community – much like the Latino community all across the country – is profoundly diverse. We have strong roots in many different countries in Latin America – from Argentina to Colombia, Panama to México, Cuba to the Dominican Republic, and everywhere in between. 

And each of us carries a rich family history in this country. Whether we are the children of recent immigrants or immigrants ourselves, or whether our families have called this land their home for many generations, Latinos are an integral pillar of the American Story. 

In so many ways, faith lies at the core of our story. 

Faith is a fundamental tenet of the Latino community’s identity. Our community’s connection to our faith traditions is strong enough to transcend borders and distance between our Latin American countries and our communities here in Indiana and all across the US. It binds our families together. It has sustained us in times of hardship and in the face of histories of discrimination. It lifts us all up in times of celebration and achievement, as we continue the fight for our American dreams.

Through prayers, we find hope for a better future for us and our children.

Through worship, we encounter an opportunity to be part of something greater than ourselves.

Through congregations, we discover newfound familia and bonds that promote the power of community. 

From North to South, and East to West, our community and our families have a strong presence in cities and towns across the state of Indiana. And, again, Indiana’s Latino community is diverse – in our origins, our racial identities, and even our faith backgrounds. 

All of this is worthy of celebration this Latino Heritage Month, and year-round. 

The Center for Congregations believes that strong congregations matter for the success and flourishing of robust communities. And this inspires the work we do for our congregations of all backgrounds. 

Our grant program supports congregations throughout Indiana with meeting their goals by funding a variety of expenses, resources, and activities. We offer resource consulting at no cost to help congregations work through concerns and gain access to the best opportunities and solutions. And, through educational resources, we connect our Indiana congregations to leading experts from across the nation with in-person learning experiences, virtual and recorded workshops, and on-demand courses.

Latino congregations of all faith traditions and backgrounds are encouraged and welcomed to take full advantage of these resources. And our team stands ready to serve you and your faith community.
