The Chapel in Fort Wayne has been hosting a Celebrate Recovery group for 13 years. Celebrate Recovery (CR) is a 12-step recovery program which uses Christian principles to facilitate healing of “hurts, habits, and hang-ups.”
I had the privilege of talking to The Chapel’s CR team, led by Keith Brakel, to hear more about their experience with the program. When asked why they chose to invest in a program like CR, the team noted many things. It is Christ-centered, which is a value of the group, but it also hosts gender and topic specific small groups, which create a safe space for participants to talk about their journey to healing. Topics covered stretch from alcohol and substance abuse to codependency and eating disorders. One leader suggested that she found healing in the program because it dealt with root causes, rather than just the negative behaviors. Within the leadership team, they held a conviction that as they received healing, they wanted to walk with others in their journey to healing and recovery.
Each meeting ends with a simple mantra, “We love you and God loves you. Keep coming back.”
These kinds of creative ideas and inspiring stories showcase congregations at their best. If you’re looking for ways that your congregation can continue to flourish, the Center for Congregations is here to help! Get in touch at firstname.lastname@example.org.
