Praying in Color

Sybil MacBeth

Thursday, November 8, Indianapolis

When family and friends were diagnosed with a multitude of illnesses, Sybil MacBeth could find no words for her prayers. Sitting on her porch, she picked up pen and colored markers and began to draw shapes. She wrote names in the shapes, then added lines, squiggles, dots, doodles, and color. When the drawing was finished, Sybil knew that she had prayed. Each mark of the pen and each stroke of color was a wordless act of hospitality—a nonverbal way to hold her family and friends in prayer and offer them into the care of God.

You are invited to join Sybil MacBeth, author of Praying in Color: Drawing a New Path to God, in creating your own visual prayer. Part of the 2007 Spirit and Place Festival, this workshop is 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Thursday, November 8, at the Center for Congregations, 303 N. Alabama St. A mathematics instructor, author and doodler, MacBeth will lead participants in creating their own visual prayers and learning the meditative and playful Praying in Color practice.

Praying in Color encourages the idea of using our senses to experience God and spirituality. Participants are encouraged to enroll in art, writing, and other classes provided around the metro-area. We will offer the opportunity for online discussion groups in this area and provide reading lists for further study. The Center also offers a monthly book club that discusses faith and writing - folks from around the Indianapolis metro-area attend this interfaith/non-faith group.

Praying in Color is 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Thursday, November 8, at the Indianapolis Center for Congregations, 303 N. Alabama St. The cost is $25, which includes art supplies, lunch, snacks, and a copy of MacBeth’s book. Advance registration is required by November 1. Space is limited.

Presented by the Indianapolis Center for Congregations, this event is part of the 2007 Spirit & Place Festival, November 2-18. Spirit & Place is an annual festival of the arts, humanities and religion at sites around Central Indiana.  For a complete schedule of events, visit www.spiritandplace.org.
