Sybil MacBeth discussed Praying in Color on Friday, September 5, 2008, in New Albany and Saturday, September 6, 2008, in Indianapolis.
When family and friends were diagnosed with a multitude of illnesses, Sybil MacBeth could find no words for her prayers. Sitting on her porch, she picked up pen and colored markers and began to draw shapes. She wrote names in the shapes, then added lines, squiggles, dots, doodles, and color. When the drawing was finished, Sybil knew that she had prayed. Each mark of the pen and each stroke of color was a wordless act of hospitality—a nonverbal way to hold her family and friends in prayer and offer them into the care of God.
Experiencing Spirituality
Sybil MacBeth, author of Praying in Color: Drawing a New Path to God, explored with participants creation of visual prayers. Praying in Color encourages the idea of using our senses to experience God and spirituality. Participants learned a prayer technique that can be easily practiced with congregants of all ages. The practice of Praying in Color adds depth to devotions at committee meetings, youth group gatherings, religious education classes, and more. Your imagination is the limit!
