Today’s kids know more about the complexities and fears of the real world than we might wish. They need and deserve pastors, teachers, mentors, and parents who can help them navigate this complicated world in the company of God.
The workshop Real Kids, Real Faith explores ways to create a more spiritual world for children. Participants will consider what Dr. Seuss and Disney can teach us about how children interpret themselves and the world; discover practices that encourage spiritual imagination and invite children to encounter God in everything they do; reflect on the roles of storytelling, ritual, and community service in the lives of young people; and share stories of life and ministries with children. Karen Marie Yust discusses the challenges and resources for ministering with children in the 21st century, drawing on cutting edge research and real families’ lives. Pastors, children’s ministers, volunteer teachers, parents, grandparents, and all others who desire to nurture children’s faith are invited to join in this learning adventure.
Yust teaches Christian education and spiritual formation at Union-PSCE in Richmond, Virginia. She is the mother of three children and an ordained minister with dual standing in the United Church of Christ and the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Yust served 11 years as a parish pastor and educator and conducts workshops on children and spirituality around the world. She is the author of Real Kids, Real Faith, Nurturing Child and Adolescent Spirituality, and Taught by God.
The workshop is 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Thursday, April 3, at First Baptist Church of Greenwood, 99 W. Main St., and Friday, April 4, at United Methodist Church of the Covenant, 10001 Coldwater Road in Fort Wayne. The cost of the workshop is $30 a person ($25 a person for congregational teams of three or more). Registrations received by March 27 guarantee lunch and a copy of Yust’s book, Real Kids, Real Faith.
