Twelve-year-old David is not really interested in becoming a doctor like his father. The only thing that makes his father’s lessons bearable is David’s sharing the information with his best friend, Malcolm. But when David’s dad finds out what David has been doing he is furious. David is white and Malcolm is black. In 1950s Tennessee their friendship is a dangerous thing for both young men, as they soon discover.
